Hamilton, ON – Alectra Utilities is addressing increasing customer electricity demands by reinforcing its power grid in Hamilton. In 2022, Alectra invested $9.7 million and plans to spend another $8.9 million in Hamilton to construct and renew infrastructure.
With parts of Alectra’s distribution system reaching the end of its life cycle, replacing underground cables and extending feeder lines, which transmit power along major arterial streets, will increase the electricity supply for customers. This series of infrastructure upgrades will stabilize the existing system and improve reliability in the community.
Alectra plans to deliver significant capital renewal projects and upgrades such as:
- Renewing and replacing underground cable on Millen Road, Barton Street East and Fruitland Road, reducing outage impacts.
- Replacing underground cable on Stonechurch Road West and Garth Street, reducing outage impacts.
- Constructing new feeder lines from Horning Transformer Station to provide capacity relief to the south-mountain area, increasing the electricity supply to customers.
- Converting parts of our aging distribution system to a higher voltage on Aberdeen Avenue, Central Avenue, Deerhurst Road and Dewitt Road, increasing power quality and reliability.
In 2021, Alectra invested $14.3 million in extending feeder lines and adding grid operation automation in Hamilton.
The leading causes of power outages in Hamilton include equipment failures, the impact of adverse weather, and equipment damaged by vehicle accidents and animal contacts. To address these issues Alectra increased system renewal investment, began constructing additional feeders, and accelerated feeder automation deployment to enable faster power outage restoration.
