Applying for AlectraCARES Support
Text

Through the AlectraCARES Community Support Program, Alectra funds local non-profit, not-for-profit and charitable organizations that support communities within our service territory. Our application and review process are guided by focus areas that help us meet the needs of present and future generations. The following focus areas ensure that our funding is directed to organizations that share our vision to build sustainable communities:

  • Food security and housing security
  • Mental health and access to health care
  • Indigenous support and reconciliation efforts
  • Vulnerable groups (seniors, children/youth, low-income households)
  • Environmental conservation and animal welfare
  • Scholarships, education and employment
  • Celebrating cultural diversity and equal opportunities for equity groups (visible minorities, 2SLGBTQI+, newcomers, persons with disabilities, women)

Our Application Process:

Our application portal opens in July of each year to intake applications for the following year. The portal stays open between July and September. Applications are reviewed in the fall, and applicants are notified of their funding status by the end of the year.

If you have questions, please email sponsorships@alectra.com and a member of Alectra's Sponsorship Team will respond to your inquiry.

What kinds of organizations are eligible?

Non-profit, not-for-profit and charitable organizations that operate in communities Alectra serves are eligible. Programs and events should align with the AlectraCARES Community Support Program focus areas.

Which communities does Alectra serve?

Alectra’s service territory is comprised of 17 communities: Alliston, Aurora, Barrie, Beeton, Brampton, Bradford West Gwillimbury, Guelph, Hamilton, Markham, Mississauga, Penetanguishene, Richmond Hill, Rockwood, St. Catharines, Thornton, Tottenham and Vaughan.

How much funding is provided to each organization?

The amount of funding varies, and there is no set amount. Organizations are required to make a request within the online application. Please use the below ranges for guidance:

  • $1,000-$5,000 is the average amount of funding
  • $5,000-$10,000 can be allocated if a great need is identified and budgets allow
  • $10,000 or over is considered a major gift and may require additional eligibility documentation and be subjected to further review. Please reach out to sponsorships@alectra.com to discuss eligibility of a request over $10,000
Why do you ask for alternative funding options in the application?

We try to fund as many deserving organizations as possible; however, sometimes we can’t provide the amount requested. The question allows organizations to provide other funding levels that align with their goals. We recommend quantifying how each funding amount will have impact. (E.g. $1000 – will allow us to… ).

If an organization doesn’t fit into a focus area, are they ineligible?

We aim to direct funding towards our focus areas; however, some outliers may be considered.

When does the application open and close each year?

The application opens each July and closes in September to intake applications for the following year. (e.g. the application opens July 2024 and closes September 2024, to intake applications for 2025.)

What is the funding schedule/timing?

Applicants will be notified in late December of the funding decisions. Accepted charitable organizations will be paid from Alectra via the Guelph Community Foundation by mid-February of the funding year. All other accepted organizations will be paid once they have been set up in Alectra’s payment system and provided a valid invoice.

What is your relationship with Guelph Community Foundation (GCF)?

To reduce administrative burden, the Guelph Community Foundation has been contracted to pay out AlectraCARES funding to accepted registered charities. GCF doesn’t make any funding decisions; they disburse the monies provided by Alectra in an administrative capacity only. Alectra is the sole donor and will maintain the funding relationship with all AlectraCARES recipients.

Can an organization submit more than one application?

Yes, an organization can submit more than one application (up to a maximum of three) if they are unsure which will align best.

Does Alectra prefer events or programs?

Due to our strong focus on sustainability, Alectra prefers to support programs directly. Standalone events are also considered.

What is the AlectraCARES Employee Volunteer Program?

The AlectraCARES Employee Volunteer Program is a support program available to Alectra employees who volunteer within our communities. Once employees have donated 20 hours of time to a non-profit, not-for-profit or charitable organization, they are eligible to request a $500 donation from Alectra be made to the organization they volunteer with.
