Alectra invests $22M to improve reliability in Vaughan through innovative cable rejuvenation process
Cable Rejuvenation in Vaughan

Vaughan, ON – Alectra Utilities is addressing increasing customer electricity demands by reinforcing its power grid in Vaughan. In 2022, Alectra invested $12 million and plans to spend another $10 million on multi-year projects to rejuvenate and replace underground cables in Vaughan.

With parts of Vaughan’s distribution system reaching the end of its life cycle, rejuvenating, and replacing underground cables will increase the electricity supply for customers. This series of infrastructure upgrades will stabilize the existing system and improve reliability in the community.

In total, these projects will improve reliability for residential and commercial customers across fourteen main areas in Vaughan:

  • Langstaff and Weston, Vaughan
  • Major Mackenzie - Keele - Rutherford - Jane, Vaughan
  • Atkinson and Worth, Vaughan
  • Kirby - Jane - Teston - Weston, Vaughan
  • Langstaff - Pine Valley - Hwy 7 - Kipling, Vaughan
  • Langstaff - Dufferin - Steeles - Jane, Vaughan
  • Hwy 7 and Pine Valley Dr, Vaughan
  • Kirby - Hwy 27 - Nashville - Huntington, Vaughan
  • Rutherford - Kipling - Langstaff - Hwy 27, Vaughan
  • Rutherford and Weston, Vaughan
  • Major Mackenzie and Keele, Vaughan

  • Langstaff - Weston - Rutherford - Jane, Vaughan
  • York Hill - Hilda - Clark

The cable injection process avoids significant costs and service disruptions, while minimizing the impacts on the environment. Rather than dig up and replace underground cables, a silicone-based injection is used to fill in weak spots, forces out moisture and hardens cables to prevent further deterioration.

For every kilometre of cable injection, Alectra avoids approximately 13 tonnes of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. To date, Alectra has injected more than 820 km of underground cable across its service territories, avoiding over 10,000 tonnes of GHG emissions.

Alectra Utilities is committed to investing in the electricity grid across all 17 communities it serves to support growth and to continue to provide safe and reliable service. Learn more about our commitment to reliability at alectrautilities.com/improving-reliability.
