Brampton, ON – Alectra Utilities announced a $24 million investment in capital renewal projects across Brampton in 2024 to improve grid reliability, support city growth and enhance service for residential and commercial customers. The upgrades will replace aging infrastructure, rehabilitate underground cables, modernize substations and connect new customers, ensuring a more resilient power supply for the community.
“The safety and reliability of electricity delivery to our customers is our highest priority,” said Chris Hudson, senior vice-president of operations at Alectra. “These investments are critical to modernizing Brampton’s infrastructure, reducing outages and preparing the grid for the ongoing growth and development of this vibrant community.”
In 2023, Alectra maintained a strong reliability record, with customers experiencing minimal outages and quick restoration times. This places Alectra among the leaders in reliability across Ontario’s local distribution companies.
Key projects planned for Brampton in 2024 include:
- $9 million to replace aging infrastructure, such as poles, transformers and switchgear, to reduce disruptions and improve grid reliability.
- $1.2 million to rehabilitate underground cables using cable injection technology to extend cable life, reduce greenhouse gas emissions and prevent outages.
- $760,000 to modernize substations, replacing outdated controllers with automated switches to speed up restoration times during disruptions.
- $12 million to connect new customers, accommodating the city’s growth and development.
- $1.1 million to deploy new automated devices, enabling faster response to grid disturbances and optimizing overall performance.
Alectra has invested approximately $297 million for capital improvements across its 17 communities in 2024 to upgrade aging equipment and build new infrastructure to meet growing demand.
