Vaughan Improving Reliability

Vaughan, ON — Alectra Utilities announced a substantial $21.7 million investment in capital renewal projects for 2024, aimed at enhancing the reliability and supporting the rapid growth of Vaughan’s energy grid. As Vaughan’s community continues to expand, Alectra is committed to upgrading and modernizing the city’s electricity infrastructure to ensure consistent and reliable service for both residential and commercial customers.

"The safety and reliability of electricity delivery to our customers is our highest priority,” said Chris Hudson, senior vice-president of operations at Alectra. “These investments are crucial not only for maintaining the quality of service today but also for supporting the ongoing growth and development of Vaughan’s thriving community.”

In 2023, Alectra maintained a strong reliability record, with customers experiencing minimal outages and quick restoration times. This places Alectra among the leaders in reliability across Ontario’s local distribution companies.

In 2024, Alectra plans to implement several key projects in Vaughan, including:

  • $7.5 million to replace aging infrastructure such as poles, transformers and switchgear. Modernizing these elements will help minimize disruptions and enhance the reliability of Vaughan’s energy grid for all customers.
  • $800,000 to deploy new automated devices, enabling swift responses to grid disturbances, optimizing performance and minimizing the impact of potential disruptions on the community.
  • $6.1 million to connect new customers, accommodating Vaughan’s growing population and business development.
  • $6 million to build a new substation in Vaughan, further increasing the capacity and resilience of the city’s power supply.
  • $1.3 million for upgrades to communications infrastructure, improving the efficiency and reliability of information flow within the grid.

Alectra has allocated approximately $297 million in 2024 for capital improvements across its 17 communities to renew aging equipment and install new infrastructure to handle growing demand.
